Mexico
For one month in Mexico, I traveled between the cities of Oaxaca and San Pedro Cajonos. During my time in the city, I had wonderful opportunities to meet small, self-sustained clothing and textile businesses. While in San Pedro Cajonos, I stayed with families maintaining a silk sanctuary.
San Pedro Cajonos
The silk sanctuary is run by artisan families who produce natural silk fibers and hand-loomed fabrics. I learned natural dyeing techniques, macrame, hand spinning, and hand-looming. The Internet is a newly available resource in this community. Using technology, my team and I helped curate new branding assets to reach a larger market as well as design additional zero-waste, hand-sewn garments to add to their store within the sanctuary.
The artists and artisans within the community heavily influenced my respect and appreciation of a culture’s craftsmanship, placing meaning behind a garment.
